Well the 52 Ladies arrived in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia without a hitch, and so did I. The opening was fantastic, we were well received. There were interesting questions asked during the artist talk and the Ladies received some press in the Chronicle Herald, Nova Scotia's main newspaper. Now I await the return of the Ladies to Toronto and am looking forward to reading new comments from the audience in the big book that accompanies the show. You may read the article by clicking on the Chronicle Herald link in the right hand corner of this page.
February 11th, 2008
Also while I am in Nova Scotia some of my work will be part of an exhibit here in Toronto. John Romano has started an auction house. The first exhibit and auction will take upstairs at the Bloor cinema. My work will be installed on the 18th of February along with the work of the others artists, and is being exhibited as precursor to a March 8th auction also at the Bloor Cinema.

Incoming; 52 Ladies for Tea, a sculptural installation by Deb Wiles
February 17th to March 23rd, 2008
Opening and reception: Sunday February 17th, 2008 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Artist's Talk: Sunday February 17th, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
"Real art exists at the frontier of what has been explored.
Because of this, it often makes people
uncomfortable. A body part whose common name can still be used as a curse
definitely constitutes unexplored territory. In consequence, Deb Wiles'
exploration of the unknown regions of the human body is art. She has treated
this revelation of the unknown with respect, as well, presenting her bronzes
carefully and with due attention to aesthetics, and with no explicit intent to
shock or exploit. Despite this, her piece is still very controversial. In a time
where nothing is controversial, that is a remarkable accomplishment."
- Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, Professor of Psychology, University of Toronto.
After
years of being exhibited online, the rising notoriety of Deb Wiles'
tour de force sculpture installation, 52 Ladies for Tea, has brought it
out of cyber space and into the sanctum of the art world. The 52 ladies touch
down and take root for a full month at ARTsPLACE, in Annapolis Royal, Nova
Scotia. For information about the artist and her work, please visit
www.debwiles.com
Deborah Wiles' exhibition consists of fifty-two life-sized cast bronze vulvae, each sitting atop a cushion and displayed on a pedestal. Of her work, Deborah says "[the work] creates the opportunity for us as audience, to have our collective shame around sexuality mirrored back to us…as a woman, activist and artist I believe it important that we address shame as a tool of control, root it out, and expose it for what it is." A journal chronicling the process of making this work will accompany the show, and audience members are encouraged to "pen their thoughts."
ARTsPLACE welcomes Deborah's beautiful and daring exhibition, and hope that the provocative nature of the work sparks dialog among men and women of the community. We invite all to the opening reception of her exhibition, Incoming Vulvae: 52 Ladies for Tea.

Thank you to everyone who came to the show yesterday. It was great to see so many people here appreciating the work. Thank you, thank you, thank you! In consideration of those who missed the show due to scheduling conflicts feel free to call me or drop an email, I'd be happy to open the doors for you. Also I think that I'll keep the show up and hold another Sunday viewing in a couple of weeks.
Saturday June 23rd, 2007 re: NOW magazine ...Deb Wyles art sale!
NOW listed my art exhibit and sale but spelled my name wrong. I was advised to just get used to that sort of thing, here's hoping that people will find there way here anyway. Also in trying to get the show planned and happening in June, I goofily managed to hold it on the same day as the Pride parade. My exhibit is no competition for the Pride parade that's for sure. I'm happy to make viewing appointments for anyone who missed this show because they were at Pride. Just drop me a line.

Thursday June, 7th, 2007 Today there were two more letters re: the MacLeans article, in the letters section of MacLeans magazine. The first letters were in the June 4th issue, the new letters appear in the June 18th issue. I've posted the letters here on the website on the MacLeans page. So clic (the big) Macleans above and the link will take you to the letters.
Sunday June, 3rd, 2007 re: Collecting stories for and from 52 Ladies and others for immediate integration into the piece. The stories will therefore immediately become part of the piece online, and I will also include the stories in the installation of exhibits.
One of the 52 Ladies has seen that people are interested in hearing the stories about the piece. Specifically people are interested in hearing stories from the models. As a result of this she will write about her experience of being cast; about what the piece meant/ means to her. She also wants to respond to some of the media going on about the piece by having her own input. As a result of our conversation we decided that it is a terrific idea to invite stories from the models and anyone else who is inspired to write one. I'll dedicate a page on this website to these writings. I'm out of touch with alot of the women who actually participated (lost touch since OCAD), so please pass this invite along to anyone you know who was cast and to anyone who wants to write about the piece. If you are a model, feel free to use your pseudonym again or not.
June 2nd, 2007 It has been drawn to my attention that the National Post article is unavailable unless you sign up with them. Therefore I scanned the article and posted it here. Also it has been suggested that the media coverage of 52 Ladies has made the public more curious about the piece (some members of the public at any rate :). So you are invited to to write about your experiences with the piece which I will then post. Not sure where Barbara Kay got her information but it's off the mark by a meter or so. A few women were initially reluctant, later women were asking me if they could participate. Here is Ms. Kays' article: national post article... 'art' of disgusting One of the wonderful things about 52 Ladies is that they do stir people up a bit. Why vulvas are considered, by some to be disgusting is beyond me, it is our entranceway into this world after all. Yoni oh yoni.
May 25th, 2007 The New MacLeans is on city shelves today. It is dated June 4th, 2007, the cover story reads Karla's BABY (this issue will reach rural shelves on June 4th, the same date it will be posted online) , check Casting Aspersions in the letters section for some vulvae feedback. Interestingly the piece has now become a point of reference, see The 'art' of the disgusting by Barbara Kay of the National Post Wednesday, May 23, 2007.

May 10th, 2007 For all who have been following the life drawing sessions thread, I've decided to find a larger space in which to host the sessions. I'd really like to have a weekly session during the day throughout the summer. I've models now online (so to speak) so it is just a matter of finding the right space (with skylights?!) and a goodly number of committed drawing enthusiasts to be in attendance. I'm working on it. Also I still have time in the weekly work schedule to take on some more students. Click here to see drawing class information Marks of Perception.
Thursday May 10th, 2007 The MacLean's which carries a feature about my work 52 Ladies for Tea, written by Julia McKinnell, is now on the news stands. The cover screams Black on Nixon. It is dated May 21st, 2007 and the feature appears on page 74. I'll post a link to it as soon as it is posted on MacLean's website. Till then you'll just have to run out an buy a copy ;) Here is the link: http://www.macleans.ca/culture/media/article.jsp?content=20070521_105249_105249
May 3rd later on, this is the message that I've just posted on Craig's list and sent around re: life drawing sessions:
May 3rd, 2007
The ceramics studio is equipment is in. The studio on the ground floor is set up. I now am teaching four drawing classes for children and loving it. There is still time in the after school schedule to run 6 more drawing classes for children. New classes begin when there are 3 children who want to take one. Daytime adult and preschooler classes are also available. Also I am in process of developing a gardening class for children. The ad for life drawing models and artists who want to draw them is running on Craig's list. The interviews for models will be held Monday May 7th from 9am-12pm @ the Grapefruit Moon 968 Bathurst St. The party is on Saturday night. It starts at 9pm...If you've been invited please bring something (food, booze, a plant or a really big rock for the garden). The hammock will be up, and I'll be able to "hook you up" with a hammock, if you happen to want one. There is also this matter of some publicity coming my way which is very exciting. More on that later.
April 26, 2007.
Presently we are setting up the studio; the drawing painting studio on the ground floor and ceramics studio in the basement.
We are also in search of life models for bi weekly life drawing sessions, an ad will be place on Craig's list in the next few days. We are not necessarily looking for professional models, but professional models are more than welcome. We need models who are comfortable to pose nude before artists in a studio environment, can sit still in strange positions, are easy to get along with, and who are reliable; that is that you show up on time, and possess a professional attitude. We will set up one day on which all interested models will be interviewed. Payment for modeling will be b/t 15.-20 per hour dependent upon your modeling experience. Work sessions will be between 2-3 hours (with breaks of course).
We also are looking for artists who are interesting in working with life models in a home studio environment.
Interested parties; models and artists may contact Deb Wiles at wilesweb{at}gmail.com
May 2007 Life Drawing sessions begin
May 2007 New drawing classes for children and adults start all the time. And it looks like I will be begin a gardening class for children this months. I'll keep this page up to date
February 17, 2008 - March 23, 2008 The Vulva Portraits will be on exhibit at ARTsPLACE in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia
Please direct inquiries regarding art classes & the commission, exhibition & sale of work to the artist.
