Well the 52 Ladies arrived in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia without a hitch, and so did I. The opening was fantastic, we were well received. There were interesting questions asked during the artist talk and the Ladies received some press in the Chronicle Herald, Nova Scotia's main newspaper. Now I await the return of the Ladies to Toronto and am looking forward to reading new comments from the audience in the big book that accompanies the show. You may read the article by clicking on the Chronicle Herald link in the right hand corner of this page.
February 11th, 2008
Also while I am in Nova Scotia some of my work will be part of an exhibit here in Toronto. John Romano has started an auction house. The first exhibit and auction will take upstairs at the Bloor cinema. My work will be installed on the 18th of February along with the work of the others artists, and is being exhibited as precursor to a March 8th auction also at the Bloor Cinema.

Incoming; 52 Ladies for Tea, a sculptural installation by Deb Wiles
February 17th to March 23rd, 2008
Opening and reception: Sunday February 17th, 2008 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Artist's Talk: Sunday February 17th, 2008 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
"Real art exists at the frontier of what has been explored.
Because of this, it often makes people
uncomfortable. A body part whose common name can still be used as a curse
definitely constitutes unexplored territory. In consequence, Deb Wiles'
exploration of the unknown regions of the human body is art. She has treated
this revelation of the unknown with respect, as well, presenting her bronzes
carefully and with due attention to aesthetics, and with no explicit intent to
shock or exploit. Despite this, her piece is still very controversial. In a time
where nothing is controversial, that is a remarkable accomplishment."
- Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, Professor of Psychology, University of Toronto.
After
years of being exhibited online, the rising notoriety of Deb Wiles'
tour de force sculpture installation, 52 Ladies for Tea, has brought it
out of cyber space and into the sanctum of the art world. The 52 ladies touch
down and take root for a full month at ARTsPLACE, in Annapolis Royal, Nova
Scotia. For information about the artist and her work, please visit
www.debwiles.com
Deborah Wiles' exhibition consists of fifty-two life-sized cast bronze vulvae, each sitting atop a cushion and displayed on a pedestal. Of her work, Deborah says "[the work] creates the opportunity for us as audience, to have our collective shame around sexuality mirrored back to us…as a woman, activist and artist I believe it important that we address shame as a tool of control, root it out, and expose it for what it is." A journal chronicling the process of making this work will accompany the show, and audience members are encouraged to "pen their thoughts."
ARTsPLACE welcomes Deborah's beautiful and daring exhibition, and hope that the provocative nature of the work sparks dialog among men and women of the community. We invite all to the opening reception of her exhibition, Incoming Vulvae: 52 Ladies for Tea.

Thursday June, 7th, 2007 Today there were two more letters re: the MacLeans article, in the letters section of MacLeans magazine. The first letters were in the June 4th issue, the new letters appear in the June 18th issue. I've posted the letters here on the website on the MacLeans page. So clic (the big) Macleans above and the link will take you to the letters.
Sunday June, 3rd, 2007 re: Collecting stories for and from 52 Ladies and others for immediate integration into the piece. The stories will therefore immediately become part of the piece online, and I will also include the stories in the installation of exhibits.
One of the 52 Ladies has seen that people are interested in hearing the stories about the piece. Specifically people are interested in hearing stories from the models. As a result of this she will write about her experience of being cast; about what the piece meant/ means to her. She also wants to respond to some of the media going on about the piece by having her own input. As a result of our conversation we decided that it is a terrific idea to invite stories from the models and anyone else who is inspired to write one. I'll dedicate a page on this website to these writings. I'm out of touch with alot of the women who actually participated (lost touch since OCAD), so please pass this invite along to anyone you know who was cast and to anyone who wants to write about the piece. If you are a model, feel free to use your pseudonym again or not.
June 2nd, 2007 It has been drawn to my attention that the National Post article is unavailable unless you sign up with them. Therefore I scanned the article and posted it here. Also it has been suggested that the media coverage of 52 Ladies has made the public more curious about the piece (some members of the public at any rate :). So you are invited to to write about your experiences with the piece which I will then post. Not sure where Barbara Kay got her information but it's off the mark by a meter or so. A few women were initially reluctant, later women were asking me if they could participate. Here is Ms. Kays' article: national post article... 'art' of disgusting One of the wonderful things about 52 Ladies is that they do stir people up a bit. Why vulvas are considered, by some to be disgusting is beyond me, it is our entranceway into this world after all. Yoni oh yoni.
May 25th, 2007 The New MacLeans is on city shelves today. It is dated June 4th, 2007, the cover story reads Karla's BABY (this issue will reach rural shelves on June 4th, the same date it will be posted online) , check Casting Aspersions in the letters section for some vulvae feedback. Interestingly the piece has now become a point of reference, see The 'art' of the disgusting by Barbara Kay of the National Post Wednesday, May 23, 2007.

Thursday May 10th, 2007 The MacLean's which carries a feature about my work 52 Ladies for Tea, written by Julia McKinnell, is now on the news stands. The cover screams Black on Nixon. It is dated May 21st, 2007 and the feature appears on page 74. I'll post a link to it as soon as it is posted on MacLean's website. Till then you'll just have to run out an buy a copy ;) Here is the link: http://www.macleans.ca/culture/media/article.jsp?content=20070521_105249_105249
February 17, 2008 - March 23, 2008 The Vulva Portraits will be on exhibit at ARTsPLACE in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia
