"Jim Christy is probably the last great hipster. I mean, the real McCoy, and not one of the current Hollywood versions who probably think Jack Kerouac is a fancy Malaysian cocktail made out of bourbon. Christy is a serious artist who happens to have a serious way with words. His paintings and collage work have a driven, hard-wrought, hard-edged, even gamey quality to them, as if making them come right wasn't an easy proposition. Christy's back with a new show of some 40 pieces at 69 Olive, a private residence.
"Sometimes I covert my house into a gallery," says Deb Wiles, gallery/homeowner. "I did it for myself a while ago, and I did it now for Jim. I'll do it again as soon as I find someone I like as much as I like us." ("Jim Christy" is at 69 Olive near Bloor and Bathurst Sts. until Oct. 21. Viewing by appointment only.
